Temi Peters
Approach and background
As an integrative therapist, I draw from several modalities to meet my clients’ specific needs including Person-centred and Psychodynamic perspectives. I believe that the creation of a safe space is of central importance in allowing for thoughts and feelings to be shared, safe in the knowledge you will not be controlled or judged. I will walk along-side you helping you make sense of ‘your world’ and understand ‘your pain’ (present and past). Through this process new ways of navigating your different relationships and psychological difficulties will be discovered.
Having had a wide range of experience in the NHS working with individuals who have low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression; I have been able to develop a better understanding and deep empathy towards the daily struggles and hopelessness that can arise when the support and coping skills to work through these difficulties are not in place. I offer a warm, gentle, and open approach which I have found to be extremely helpful to my past and present clients in helping them find new ways of being in the world and letting go of old no longer helpful patterns.
Confidentiality is treated as a high priority in my practice. It is the trust within the therapeutic relationship that I have come to rely on, and the collaborative working alliance that leads to the most successful outcomes.
I have a deep passion for supporting individuals who have experienced childhood trauma from emotional, psychological, economic, and cultural abuse. Especially individuals from ethnic minorities, who have developed a distorted sense of self-worth, and a low self-esteem.
Training, qualifications, and experience
I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor & Psychotherapist with over 20 years’ experience working within Christian Counselling and Worship ministry.
I have worked as an IAPT Counsellor, an NHS service designed to offer short-term psychological therapies to people suffering from anxiety, depression, and stress. This has given me access to a range of individuals from various backgrounds and communities, enhancing my ability to work with difference.
My volunteering experience has been as a support worker, working with families or individuals who experienced Domestic Violence & Abuse, usually displaced, and trying to get back on their feet. This has broadened my knowledge of local government resources and charity organisations for signposting.
With a background in Business IT, Quality Analysis and Customer Services; I decided to retrain in 2015, starting with the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, followed by the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies. On completion, I moved on to a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy, promptly followed by a Masters in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy.
As a professional singer and humanitarian, I also run a not-for-profit organisation and continue to work within the church environment and local community, creating a platform for live music, creative arts, and performance, which helps bring communities together.
Alongside my private practice, I continue to volunteer with a local mental health charity.
I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) whose code of ethics I abide by.
