Dr Dedani Dlodlo
HCPC REGISTERED COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST AND CLINICAL SUPERVISOR
Approach and background
As a Counselling Psychologist, I aim to create a secure and empathetic space for individuals and couples to explore and overcome their emotional challenges. I have a special interest in working with clients who have experienced complex trauma, anxiety, depression, workplace issues, attachment difficulties and relationship dynamics.
I am skilled in offering trauma-focused therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT) and couples therapy and I am able to draw on dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) skills. I take an integrative approach, making use of various therapeutic skills, according to my clients’ needs, to facilitate a process of healing that helps achieve resilience and change. In so doing, I work to foster an environment where clients feel empowered to engage in deep self-exploration and implement practical strategies that promote personal growth, enhance relationships and lead to lasting psychological well-being.
In each session, I am attentive to the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship itself, which I view as a fundamental element of the healing process. I believe that a strong and authentic therapeutic relationship is key to facilitating meaningful change and often the most significant predictor of therapy outcomes.
Specialty Areas:
Trauma-focused therapy: Helping clients heal from past traumas, fostering resilience and empowerment.
Anxiety and mood difficulties: Utilising evidence-based strategies to manage symptoms and enhance life quality.
Attachment difficulties: Specialising in strategies that enhance attachment security, fostering healthier relationships and emotional resilience.
Employment issues: Assisting clients with workplace stress, career transitions, and burnout.
Couples therapy: Facilitating improved communication and conflict resolution to strengthen relationships.
Training, qualifications, and experience
I bring a decade of experience in diverse mental health settings such as the NHS, schools, and local councils, complemented by a strong academic background. I have expertise in psychological assessments and therapeutic interventions, which allow me the skills and confidence to work with a wide range of psychological issues affecting individuals, adults, families and couples.
My experience of offering therapy began with adult clients in primary care mental health services. I then progressed to working in secondary care settings with clients who presented with complex and severe mental health challenges. By 2017, my focus shifted to Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), where I supported children and families, collaborating closely with social workers, schools and foster carers. My role often involved working with young people who faced significant trauma, including those from disrupted family environments and asylum-seeking backgrounds. Subsequently, I progressed to supervising and coordinating a mental health support team to enhance the support structures for staff, students and families in schools.
I currently work with Camden Local Authority to support young adults at risk of criminal and sexual exploitation, addressing their experiences of complex trauma through psychological therapy and professional consultation. Additionally, I serve as a Visiting Lecturer and Research Supervisor at City, University of London on the Counselling Psychology Doctoral Program. In private practice, I offer support to individuals and couples using the approaches described above.
I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), whose code of ethics I abide by.
