What is Radically-Relational Psychotherapy?
In psychotherapy, a radically-relational approach refers to a deep and transformative process emphasising the importance of relationships in the healing journey. Radically-relational psychotherapy involves a mutual engagement between the therapist and client - both actively involved in the therapeutic process.
As therapists, we are active participants in the therapeutic relationship, whilst maintaining a professional, observer and neutral position. Research shows that the quality of the relationship between the client and therapist is the best predictor of therapeutic outcomes. Our humanness is at the core of what we do.
We recognise the importance of a safe and supportive environment, where our clients feel understood, accepted and validated. When an authentic therapeutic relationship is established, change can happen. This is because, as human beings, our most primal need is to be in relationship. Therefore, one way psychological growth and wellbeing can occur is through being in a high-quality therapeutic relationship.
-
Through therapeutic dialogue and a deepening therapeutic contact, unconscious patterns of relating to self, others and the world - developed throughout life and childhood - are brought into conscious awareness. By bringing these patterns into awareness, there is an opportunity for change. This gives our clients new models for relating, which can then be applied to relationships outside of the therapeutic space.
With over two decades of professional training and experience, Nathan Claxton - the founder of The Brixton Practice - has come to recognise that loving presence and congruence is at the heart of the healing journey. It is contact between two human beings that is the foundation of an effective therapeutic alliance - improving mental health and wellbeing. We offer this in an authentic way, within professional boundaries, so the relationship is ethical and safe. As fully qualified therapists, we bring our academic training and expertise into our role. We have a genuine care for our clients and take our job very seriously.
“All of us are much more human than otherwise.”

How We Can Help
A Radically-Relational Approach
Taking that first step to talk to a therapist may feel overwhelming, yet it may also feel exciting and is an opportunity for growth and change. When relationships are secure and stable, they help prevent our vulnerability from becoming overwhelming. It is the quality of the therapeutic relationship which influences the outcome of therapy, therefore we work with you to find the best therapist for you.
As professionally trained psychotherapists, we help our clients process life’s difficulties and traumas. Our psychotherapists and counsellors at The Brixton Practice have experience supporting clients through past or present abuse - sexual, physical, emotional, and neglect - obsessive thinking, anxiety, (c)PTSD, anorexia nervosa and bulimia. We also support clients with a range of other issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, ASD, other psychiatric diagnoses, and those living with terminal illness. We can also offer counselling and psychotherapy as a preventative measure, for clients who wish to maintain optimal mental health.
Whilst we can help with a psychiatric diagnosis, we don’t predominantly work from a medical model. At The Brixton Practice, we emphasise a trauma approach to psychotherapy, seeing psychological and emotional challenges as symptoms of traumatic experience. By gaining a deeper insight into the origins of your emotional difficulties, you can discover better ways to heal. As a result, radically-relational psychotherapy can help improve spiritual, psychological and emotional wellbeing.
