Laura Lauberte

PHILADELPHIA ASSOCIATION IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY & PHENOMENOLOGY

Approach and background

I hold space for my clients and witness the process of exploration that is necessary for finding ways towards deeper self knowledge. Often people seek therapy when there is a sense of fragmentation or falling apart. Finding ways to relate to different parts within oneself can be necessary in order to feel wholeness and connection. I support my clients in their search for meaning, and often see how unravelling the knots in relationships, tending grief, and exploring suffering can lead to a sense of meaning and purpose. I often witness how this process can be initiated through nurturing connections with embodied parts of lived experiences. An important piece in the therapeutic process is attuning to the messages from within, and I support the process of listening.

My work is trauma informed, and seeking understanding of how the body holds or ‘keeps the score’ (Bessel Van Der Kolk), is something we can look at together. With less emphasis on doing, instead attending to what is already known yet might be forgotten, I witness my clients experiencing a renewed sense of agency, self acceptance and love.

The importance of the support that can be resourced from community is undeniable, and looking at how my clients are situated amongst people around them is an integral part of the therapeutic work I engage in. We can explore how to negotiate belonging to groups, be that work, family, or any other group. This interest has been seeded through my work with women, being part of numerous women’s groups, where the need for communal support and holding has emerged as a fundamental need.

I recognise that transformation and finding meaning does not always follow a linear path and my clients have an opportunity to open up to new ways of thinking, feeling and doing through accessing open ended, short term, or longer term therapeutic process. This sometimes becomes possible through allowing for the states of uncertainty in service of curiosity, and surrendering to new experiences. Creativity can emerge in a therapeutic setting, and explorations of the unknown are part of it. I meet my clients with humility, in a space where differences are welcomed and precious.

Our shared otherness can guide us towards an ethics of acceptance, integration, growth, and expansion. In order to support my work I have a sustained Yoga, and Qi Gong practice, as well as draw from somatic tools to understand experiences.

Training, qualifications, and experience

I have trained at Philadelphia Association in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and phenomenology. Prior to my training I completed a BA degree in Study of Religions atSOAS and an MA degree in Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck.

I have engaged with therapeutic communities set up by Philadelphia Association, where I worked from April 2022 until February 2023. For 3 years I facilitate a year long experiential group as part of the Introduction Course at Philadelphia Association, and have taught seminars on the Introduction course, and on the Online Introduction to Community, Philosophy and Psychotherapy course.

I have worked with vulnerable groups as a family support worker for over 6 years. I have been involved with women’s groups and grass roots movements for over 10 years, and support spaces where women can have an opportunity to be mutually supportive throughout diverse journeys, and in various stages of their lives.

My practice is embedded in psychoanalysis, phenomenology and feminist philosophy.

I see clients through the clinic at Philadelphia Association, as well as in my private practice.
